FAQS
Q: Why is there a picture of a piece of bread on your homepage?
A: Because I wanted to have a picture or design on my page that was French, but the Eiffel Tower is too cliché. I tried looking for a picture of a bony man wearing a beret and arguing with somebody at a café but I couldn't find one, so I settled for the humble baguette.
Q: How often will you be updating your site?
A: My original target was every two weeks. But my recent track record hasn't been so good, so I will at least shoot for once a month.
Q: How long will you be there?
A: I graduate in December 2003.
Q: What are your plans for afterwards?
Not sure exactly yet. I will concentrate my job search here in Paris and back home in the US, but I'm still open to other ideas and places, especially Asia. It all depends on the offer.
Q: Who invented liquid soap and why?
A: William Shepphard first patented liquid soap on August 22, 1865. The first modern liquid soap was introduced in 1980 by Minnetonka Corporation. Minnetonka cornered the liquid soap market by buying up the entire supply of the plastic pumps needed for the liquid soap dispensers (a "monopsony"). The Colgate Company acquired the liquid soap business from Minnetonka and renamed the product Softsoap in 1987. I'm sorry I don't know the reason why.
Q: How are the French?
A: The French, especially Parisians, get a bad rap. I think the French are easy to deal with. France is bureaucratic, and it often seems that the process is more important than the result. Actually, I have not run across the typical rude Parisian, probably because I try to speak French with them.
Q: What is the fastest land animal?
A: Cheetah.
Q: Can I come visit you (and stay at your place)?
A: Of course. In fact, if you have a friend (even one that I have never met) who is coming to Paris he/she is more than welcome to crash here. Be sure to first read my initial entries (September 19 and 23) before deciding whether or not you really want to stay here.
Q: Will you show me around Paris?
A: I am living off of student loans, so if you are willing to pay for all the trains, admission fees, dinners, drinks etc., then of course. Especially the drinks. Also, it can only be a Saturday or Sunday unless I happen to have a day off.
Q: How are the girls there?
A: Very nice. I have to keep this page rated PG so I can't say too much more than that.
Q: Do fiddler crabs make good pets?
A: As cute as they are, they would make poor pets. The reason is, they are hard to keep physiologically happy. Most fiddler crabs are semi-terrestrial, meaning that they don't like to be underwater all the time, but they need to be some of the time. An ideal aquarium for fiddlers would be bad for most other animals, so unless you just want a fiddler crab colony of some sort, adding a couple of cute fiddlers to an existing tank is probably a bad idea. It can be done, but they probably won't be happy, and it's rather cruel.
